Simple Guide to Help You Re-Pressurise Your Boiler

October 11, 2022

One of the first signs showing that your boiler may need re-pressurising, is the heat and hot water sudden loss. Of course, to make sure that indeed the water pressure drop is what is causing the problem, you need to check the boiler gauge – if the pressure appears to be lower than 1 bar, re-pressurising is required.

On the bright side, spotting the low boiler pressure is pretty easy and straightforward in terms of fixing the issue yourself. We have included some useful step-by-step guide below, to help you out complete things smoothly:

  1. Before you begin, make sure that the boiler is switched off and has cooled down.
  2. Locate the filling loop – the same is usually located underneath the boiler and its appearance resembles silver flexible pipe, with a valve at either end. Before proceeding further, ensure that the loop is firmly connected to the boiler’s pipes.
  3. Turn the valves – open both valves on the filling loop by turning them anti-clockwise. You should hear water flowing into the system.
  4. Keep the valves open until the pressure gauge shows a pressure of between 1 and 1.5 bar.
  5. Once the required pressure has been reached, close both valves on the filling loop by turning them clockwise one after another.
  6. You can now switch on the boiler, and if required, press the restart button. Inspect the pressure once again and ensure it has now stabilized.

It’s important to re-pressurise your boiler as soon as you notice that the pressure has dropped. A lack of pressure can cause the boiler to shut down or even damage the internal components over time. If you’re unsure about how to re-pressurise your boiler or if you experience any problems during the process, contact us and we will be on hand to help.

  • While most of the boilers and filling loops follow the same process, always check the manufacturer’s booklet for your boiler before starting. If you are unsure about any of the steps involved, contact us and we will gladly assist you.
  • There could be different reasons causing the loss of heat and hot water. Checking the pressure gauge is useful to establish whether the issue is related to water pressure drop, however, there could be different issues causing the problem. Never attempt to open and look inside your boiler – this is something that only a gas safe registered engineer can do. Contact us and we will send an engineer over to help.
  • If you have a Worcester Bosch boiler, the re-pressurising process would be slightly different.
